1963: The Struggle for Civil Rights

Over 230 pieces of primary source material from the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum, organized as part of a chronology that focuses on seven occurrences in 1963, but also highlights events from 1939-1965. Example of formats include press conferences, letters, photographs, film footage, secret audio recordings, etc. Includes educator (i.e. lesson plans) and student resources.

American Civil Liberties Union

Features an "Issues" section that describes what is at stake, as well as the latest news stories, regarding racial justice, capital punishment, free speech, and immigrant's rights, for example. The  "Defending our Rights" section has an archive of summaries of Supreme Court cases dealing with civil liberties dating back to 1996, as well as information about court battles in progress. There is also a preparatory section called  "Know Your Rights" that addresses circumstances one may anticipate discrimination or abuse of power may occur. Offers a keyword search. Civil Rights Digital Library

Offers primary sources and other educational materials from libraries, archives, museums, public broadcasters, and others on a national scale. Searchable by keyword, or browsing by category (i.e. events, places, people, topics, educator resources, media type, contributing institution). From the University of Georgia.

Civil Rights History Project

Offers oral history videos of activists who participated in the Civil Rights Movement, representing both national (e.g. CORE, SNCC, NAACP) and local and specialized groups (e.g. Cambridge (Maryland) Nonviolent Action Committee). Transcripts are available in PDF or XML. Searchable by keyword, or browseable via the Collection Items tab. There is also an Articles and Essays tab that address several aspects of the movement (e.g. music, youth, women, tactics, March on Washington, voting rights, etc.). From the Library of Congress. Historical Publications of the United States Commission on Civil Rights (USCCR)

Complete collection of reports that date back to this federal agency's inception in 1957. Common themes include: race, ethnicity, religion, and sexual orientation. Browsable by title, date, subject, subdoc number, and location. Available online via a partnership with Thurgood Marshall Law Library.
