About the GED

The GED is broken into four subject tests. You don’t need to take all four tests at once, you can spread them out and go at your own pace.

• Reasoning Through Language Arts (RLA) (150 minutes)
• Mathematical Reasoning (115 minutes)
• Science (90 minutes)
• Social Studies (70 minutes)

GED Eligibility

In Maryland, you can take the GED if you are NOT currently enrolled in high school, are NOT a high school graduate, are a resident of Maryland, and have been officially withdrawn from traditional high school for at least three months.

If the GED isn’t a good fit, Maryland residents can also consider the External Diploma Program.

• Learning Express Library. The GED Preparation section includes practice tests, preparation courses and guides. Also includes Spanish-language GED preparation. Requires an Enoch Pratt Free Library card.
• Gale Courses. Enroll in online courses Prepare for the GED test and Prepare for the GED Math Test. Requires an Enoch Pratt Free Library card.
• Brainfuse Adult Learning Center - Pass the GED. Take practice tests and chat with a testing coach to help answer any questions you may have. Requires an Enoch Pratt Free Library card.
• GED Testing Service. This is the official website of the GED Testing Service, offering information on the mechanics of taking the GED tests, as well as testing locations, policies, and requirements for both taking the test and passing it.

GED Classes

Find a GED preparation class using the Directory of Maryland Adult Education Programs.

Maryland Online GED Preparation Classes are available for people who are:

• A Maryland resident,
• At least 18 years of age,
• Officially out of school,
• Able to demonstrate skills appropriate for the online curriculum by pre-testing in math and reading at your local Adult Education program.
• Committed to submitting at least 6 assignments and studying 5-6 hours per week.
