Trauma Informed Practice for Library Staff Training Series
The Maryland State Library Resource Center conducted it’s first-ever Trauma Informed Practice for Library Staff Training Series on August 3rd and 4th, 2021
This three-part virtual training series was led by Melissa Glenn, MA, LMHC, CMHS. Below are links to recordings of each training session, along with a presenter bio and session descriptions.
Presenter Bio
Melissa Glenn is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor in Washington State. She has several years of experience providing therapeutic services in clinical and educational settings. She has also demonstrated expertise overseeing health and social services programming in public libraries, including training library staff across the country, most recently at ALA’s 2020 Symposium on the Future of Libraries and this year’s Statewide Circulation Conference. Melissa brings a whole health, trauma-informed perspective to mental health and community work.

This foundational presentation defines the concept of trauma and addresses these questions:
- What causes trauma?
- What is the impact of trauma?
- What are common signs of trauma?
- How do Adverse Childhood Experiences affect health and success in adulthood?

This session introduces Trauma-Informed Care as a framework for recognizing and responding to trauma. Attendees will learn the principles of Trauma-Informed Care, including how to practically apply them in a library setting.

Wednesday, August 4, 2021
The final session addresses vicarious trauma – the disruption that can occur as a result of caring for others. Attendees will explore:
- Signs of vicarious trauma
- Factors that contribute to vicarious trauma in the workplace and community
- What self-care is and is not
- Strategies for sustainable self-care
