The Spring SLRC Conference will be on Wednesday, March 21, 2012.

Included in this year's conference are the traditional programs, structured and facilitated discussions, tours of the SLRC subject departments, and hands-on instruction. Participants will earn 6 CEUs for attending the full-day SLRC Conference.

The keynote speaker for the Spring SLRC Conference will be ALA President-Elect Maureen Sullivan.

8:15-9:00 Coffee and Registration
9:00-9:10 Welcome
9:10-9:30 Keynote Speaker - ALA President Elect Maureen Sullivan
9:45-12:15 Intellectual Freedom - A brief overview of the issues surrounding Intellectual Freedom including resources for protecting and educating your customers. We'll focus on real-world examples of censorship, privacy and copyright. 

9:45-12:15 Beyond the Basics: Legal Reference Strategies - This workshop will go beyond the basics of legal resources to teach what librarians really need to know when handling questions about law and legal matters. The program will present effective reference strategies for responding to patron questions, including an in-depth look at ethical issues at the reference desk, best web-based resources for getting the patron started, and best referrals to use when you’ve exhausted your own knowledge. Real-life questions will be used as illustrations throughout the program. Detailed information will be provided on which law libraries can help, how, and when.

9:45-12:15 Building Tour - Tour of the twelve public service departments of the Central Library, spending 5 to 10 minutes in each department, meeting with departmental staff. (limit 20) (Activity is FULL.)

9:45-11:00 MILO and Marina: Past, Present, and Future - Participants will get information on the history of MILO and the services that MILO provides for all types of libraries throughout Maryland. The following will be included: coordinating the resource sharing system for all public libraries, serving as a broker for forwarding requests not found in the Marina virtual catalog to OCLC. and logistics of the statewide delivery system (including a tour of the Transshipping department.) Also highlighted will be information about the upcoming migration to a new resource sharing vendor.

9:45-11:00 Unconference Session – Future of Libraries –Join a discussion with fellow librarians from around the state about the future of libraries.

11:10-12:25 Digitization Basics: Making the Past Accessible in the Digital Present - Learn more about the fundamentals of the digitization process, including digitization technologies, standards, and best practices within the field. Also find out more about the Maryland Digital Cultural Heritage program and other digitization initiatives focused on providing access to historical materials.

11:10-12:25 What Do You Know About Maryland? - An entertaining class that will that will assure participants know the best online and print resources when answering questions about the history and politics of Maryland. Librarians will learn five key sites for locating Maryland information online, know which books are essential for a core Maryland history collection, become familiar with the retrospective history material in the Maryland Department, and much more.
(Limit to 15 people) (Activity is FULL.)
1:30-4:00 E-Readers and E-Books - E-Readers are more popular than ever before. There are so many from which to choose, and navigating the differences can be confusing. This workshop will cover some of the basic features of some popular e-reader devices, and how to use the Maryland Digital eLibrary Consortium Web site to borrow e-books.

1:30-2:45 Social Media and Libraries - You’ve probably heard about Social Media but maybe aren’t quite sure how your library could use it, or if you should even try it out. During this session we will discuss what social media is and provide best practices for many of the tools such as Facebook, Twitter, Flickr & YouTube.

1:30-2:45 Unconference Session – Dealing with Challenging Customers - This audience participation discussion will allow you to share ideas and library policies for handling specific patron behaviors, negotiating limits on assisting customers, and dealing with your most challenging patrons. (Activity is FULL.)

2:50-4:05 Great Hits from the Fine Arts Dept: I’m Looking for a song...and What Are My Antiques and Collectibles Worth? - Two subjects top the most-requested list in SLRC’s Fine Arts and Music Department: How to identify and find sheet music for popular songs, and how to get information about the value of antiques and collectible items. This program will highlight SLRC’s numerous resources on these subjects, as well as providing suggestions and hints that librarians around Maryland can use at their branches to help their patrons right away.

2:50-4:05 Financial Literacy for Tough Times - As important as financial literacy has always been, it is even more crucial today that our customers have access to all the governmental, organizational, and commercial resources available to help them through difficult economic times. Attend this workshop for a comprehensive overview of the most essential financial literacy resources including an introduction to excellent non-profit organizations that are there to help people in financial need.
