The Spring SLRC Tour will be held Thursday, May 6, 2010. Plan to join us for a day of learning, discovery, and fun! There will be workshops and tours. Find out what the State Library Resource Center offers you and your customers. Registration and details to follow on slrc.info and MERLIN (Maryland’s Essential Resource for Library Information Networks, the learning community for Maryland library staff).

9:00 to 9:30 Coffee and Refreshments
9:30 to 9:50 Welcome and Introductions 
10 AM to 11:20 AM Business Reference Sources
Covers evaluation, analysis and use of business resources. Includes resources on starting a business; how to locate information on a particular company; business ranking and statistics; investment information and taxes; and electronic and Internet resources. An annotated bibliography of print and electronic resources available at SLRC will be provided.

10 AM to 1 PM  Basic Reference plus AUN!
Focusing on staff new to reference work or for those who would like a refresher, this workshop includes an overview of AskUsNow! After a brief review of Model Reference Behaviors, participants will increase their knowledge of ten of the most frequently used print resources through hands-on exercises giving them an opportunity to test their skills and share impressions.

10 AM to 11:20 AM  Google (Mostly)
Take a hands-on look at some of the features of Google that you may not use regularly.

11:30 to 1:00 PM  African-American Resources
Focus on resources used to assist with reference questions and research. Included will be specialized databases, websites, microfilm collections, etc.

11:30 to 1:00 PM  Intellectual Freedom
Experience a brief overview of the issues surrounding Intellectual Freedom and resources for protecting and educating your customers. Come discuss real-world examples of library challenges with censorship and privacy.

10:00 AM to 3:30 PM  All Day Tour
Take a tour of the twelve public service departments of the Central Library/S.L.R.C., spending 15 to 20 minutes in each department, meeting with departmental staff.


(If you choose this tour, it will be your only event of the day) 0.45 Credit Hours.

2:00 PM to 3:30 PM  Maryland Genealogy
Family history has become a popular and captivating pastime. Many people would like to begin researching their ancestors but do not know where to begin -- and they're going to ask you. This program will introduce you to the fundamental print resources, where to start online, databases, the best places in Maryland to conduct research and what you can obtain from the SLRC collection. Participants receive handouts that will identify the most useful Internet resources.

2:00 PM to 3:30 PM  Storytelling for Non-tellers
For those who have yet to get their feet wet in the storytelling world, we offer a variety of styles and techniques to intrigue and inspire the uninitiated.

2:00 PM to 3:30 PM  Collection Management
SLRC's selectors will take you step-by-step through Pratt's centralized collection management process. This workshop will begin with selection and move through ordering, cataloging, and processing to a shelf ready book. Our discussion will include strategies for gathering collection information from branches to insure that centralized selection will reflect local needs.
